The 4055 thing worth knowing

Ferny Hills is in the City of Moreton Bay. Ferny Grove, immediately next door, is in the City of Brisbane. Both are postcode 4055.

If you run a business that only sells things over a counter, this is trivia. If you are a trade, a builder, a landscaper, or anyone whose work sometimes needs approval, it is not: the two councils assess separately and do not apply everything identically. A certifier confirms what applies to a given address, but knowing which side of the line a job sits on saves a wasted phone call.

It matters for your website too, less obviously. A lot of businesses out here write “4055” in their copy and think they have covered it. They have not, because nobody searches a postcode. People search the suburb they live in, and 4055 is at least two suburbs in two different councils.

An established suburb, which changes the pitch

Ferny Hills has a population of about 8,700 across roughly 10 square kilometres, sitting around 16 kilometres north-west of the Brisbane CBD. It is a settled, established residential suburb.

That means two things for a local business.

Your customers are not going anywhere. In a suburb with this kind of stability, a job done well turns into your neighbour’s job, and then their sister’s. Word of mouth is the main channel and it always will be. A website’s job here is to catch that word of mouth. Someone gets your name from a neighbour, searches it, and finds either a proper site or nothing, and that search decides whether the recommendation turns into a job.

Housing stock ages at the same rate. Suburbs that filled in together generate the same kind of work at the same time: deck rebuilds, stair replacements, repairs. If that is your trade, the demand is there, and the businesses that turn up in local searches take it.

Competing against Brisbane, not against Dayboro

At 16 kilometres out, you are close enough to the city that Brisbane agencies will happily quote your job, and close enough that some of your customers will consider a tradie from Everton Park or The Gap.

So local, on its own, is not a strong enough argument out here. What is:

• Naming every suburb you actually serve, individually, in the copy and in the structured data. Ferny Hills, Ferny Grove, Arana Hills, Keperra, Everton Hills, wherever you go.
• Being obviously reachable. Phone number as a button, a text option, and a form behind those rather than in front.
• Proof. Photographs of your own finished jobs, and reviews with a suburb attached. A review tagged to the next street over carries weight an anonymous five stars cannot.
• A Google Business Profile that matches the site exactly, with the service area set to the suburbs you named.

Straight up

I have no Ferny Hills client yet. I would rather say so than fake a local presence, which is the same reason the prices are published instead of hidden behind a sales call.
